Arrival and Departure
Bronte Boats is known for its flexibility so we try to work around your requirements. We will have our day boat ready for collection at 9.30am on the day of departure. If for any reason you are unable to arrive on time, please contact the booking office so that prior arrangements can be made. Your boat must be returned and vacated by 5pm at the latest.
Tuition? – Do we need experience?
You don’t need any experience. Before your trip you can view our videos of how to operate a lock and the workings of a boat. Upon arrival we will then show you how the boat works and guide you through the first lock. We will stay with you until you feel comfortable with how everything works, so you feel relaxed and enjoy your trip.

Which route should we choose?
There are two routes available. Heading east towards Sowerby Bridge is quite an easy sail. There are 4 locks between Hebden Bridge and Sowerby Bridge and the journey will take approximately 3 hours each way. The turning point at the limit of your navigation in Sowerby Bridge is just before the deepest lock in the UK, constructed in 1996 to reopen the Rochdale canal to the Calder Hebble Navigation and the rest of the UK network.
Heading west towards Todmorden and Manchester you will climb up to 6 locks. As the valley narrows in this direction the wildlife and scenery become even more impressive. Enjoy a picnic on the scenic canalside or call into the Stubbing Wharf for good food and beer.
What about insurance?
You are covered for damage to the boat and third party claims for accidents involving the boat up to £10m. A damage liability waiver fee is included in the price quoted. For personal accidents and personal possessions, we strongly recommend the optional scheme unless you have other insurance.
Do we need a minimum crew?
You have to have a minimum crew of two adults. One person to handle the boat and one to work the locks.
What if we have non swimmers?
Don’t panic folks we will provide life jackets free of charge. We recommend children wear life jackets, especially when helping with the locks.
Can we bring pets?
Pets are very welcome but unfortunately a small cleaning fee will be included.
Can we go fishing?
There’s some good sport to be had. Most of the fishing clubs sell day or weekly permits but you must have a national rod licence.
